Pyrenees - first snow

by rose marie

January 4, 2012

My first blog of 2012: this photo was taken in November last when the first snow covered the peaks in the Pyrenees. By now they have been layered in packs of snow, enough to enable wintersport activities.

What is so special about the first snow is that it looks so pure and so unblemished, fragile and elegant at the same time. Majestical and promising ….

The Pyrenees have a certain mystical quality already by themselves and this quality is enhanced by the snow. I am absolutely not a person that loves the “sports d’hiver” so to me this is all I need to see during the winter time but I can imagine that it turns people on.

From where I am located, in Esperaza, under the smoke of Rennes le Chateau and close to Mount Bugarach, it takes about 2 hours to reach the ski slopes as well as the mediterranean coast. A perfect location for a week long stay to enjoy all of these opportunities. Furthermore, to go into Spain and visit some of the interesting sites, like the Dali museums, is only  a 3 hour drive away. Very well do-able and a beautiful trip. And then there are so many other beautiful visits to make, specifically the Cathar Castles with all their history and background.

Welcome to the Aude in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon……
